Twitter ye not - Go smell Twitter

Posted 4 years ago #

Hi - I'm currently exploring Twitter as another medium to interact with our customers, site visitors and potential visitors as part of our ongoing social networking here at Fabulous Photo Gifts - http://www.fabulousphotogifts.co.uk

Here's our Twitter page - http://www.twitter.com/fabphotogifts - we'd love to see you over there.

Have you tried Twitter and didn't get on with it? Are you finding Twitter indispensible, or have you used Twitter but probably won't again? Do tell.

Hi Purple!

Thanks for this and sadly twitter is banned here in the United Arab Emirates - we do have bans from time to time on certain youtube pages and facebook groups as ultimately we live in a Muslim country.

That aside, for the rest of the community - how do you find Twitter?

Hi Jim - Sorry to hear that. Can't quite see the problem with infidels chatting with each other by hey ho.

As I said its all very new - I'm exploring it as another way to interact with a new audience (or potential existing).
FIrst thoughts are its a bit like txt on a pc - there doesn't seem much opportunity to actually reply to someone else's twitter (maybe i'm still a novice) but i 'followed' 5 'friends' and have two following me.

The advice seems to be to twitter at least every two days - i saw plenty of accounts that hadn't been used in months so there may be a high drop off percentage.

I'll keep groping around in the dark though and try to spread some light on twitter as we go on. I'll post anything interesting here for yours and others benefits.

Wow, I didn't know UAE actually ban some of the websites or pages on the web..well I wonder why they ban Twitter..anyway I am on Twitter too. Twitter is fun if you have many followers and you are following many people..

hi aussie - what with that and the puppies? - yes time is the issue hence the rather ad-hoc once every two days rule i think. Picked up a couple of followers from BlogCatalog.

G'Day mate
I try and post each day on Aussie, then I do my diggs through my email, and I stumble as I go....
BC is great for gathering followers etc, and socialising the same with Digg... building a nice network also do Entracard thats pretty good for bloggers...
try those and see.... Diggs is more reading, Stumbles is visual, Entracard promotions etc... all take time though...

Hi Nursa' - I'm looking forward to spreading the word to a whole new audience but i'll try not to make it too much like promotion of fab photo's. see you there.

Jim, I don't think Twitter is banned because UAE is a muslim country. For your information India is the world's 2nd larges Muslim country and Indonesia is the largest. Twitter is not banned in either of these !

I think the issue is that UAE is essentially a monarchy and speech is controlled. UAE is hardly a muslim country by constitution and does not have a religious code per constitution and law; unlike say Italy which by constitution is Catholic. You live in Dubai, why would bars and bikinis be allowed if it was as you make it out to be ?

A fair point RYK BUT.....

The UAE is a Muslim country with Western ideals rules by a benevolent dictatorship.

Phone / Internet is provided by Muslim led Etisalet is who control how much of facebook we see, youtube links and which blogs are pulled or not....

Why?

the point is that it not religious motives that have blacked out Twitter, but political motives. Not all motives are religious.

I used to live in Holland in the 90s and could not buy a television set without producing my marriage certificate !

Here are some absurd laws from GB, do you feel they were drawn because GB is a Christian state?

1. It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament
2. It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British king or queen’s image upside-down
3. It is illegal for a woman to be topless in Liverpool except as a clerk in a tropical fish store
4. Eating mince pies on Christmas Day is banned
5. If someone knocks on your door in Scotland and requires the use of your toilet, you are required to let them enter
6. In the UK a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants, including in a policeman’s helmet
7. The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the King, and the tail of the Queen
8. It is illegal not to tell the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing
9. It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour
10. It is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls of York, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow

Could you please meet me in York with your bow n arrow and we'll sort this out.

Hi RYk and hello again to you jim.

Your conversation has been illuminating - perhaps we'd all be better discussing it over in the main blog?

I personally love twitter, if you are not able to access Twitter in your country then try accessing it using http://hahlo.com/ (You will need to register at Twitter first though)

Also, you can try connecting using desktop clients like Twhirl for windows.

Hi Deep (or should that be @deep ?) see - I'm getting the hang of it!
Thanks for that tip - hopefully that will help a few more access twitter.

Incidently, I'm finding the 'search' function very useful for following new Twitter's - you can seach for e.g photography, uk, and it returns those Twitters since this is my first 'target audience'. (que evil manic laugh).

Good luck and see you all there.

Hi all... I have been on twitter for the last 9 months and love using it. I get my favorite blog posts pretty much as soon as they are written, I find out about software and plugins for wordpress, and many more useful tidbits that I would otherwise miss out on if I wasn't on there. I have also made some great online friends with interesting sites to read... if you would like to follow me at http://twitter.com/angesbiz that would be great! I know Jonathan found me this last week from my last post on here... the more the merrier!

If like me you discovered the Flower garden here via a chance encounter on Blog Catalog - then you may be interested to know hey have a Twitter group where you are invited to leave your twitter and perhaps add a few to follow yourself - did mine at lunchtime - followed the lot and have 5 following you replies/alerts so far.

I'm twitter-pated!

I do not Twitter...why all of a sudden do I feel everyone glaring at me. I don't like the public nature of it. Plus, I do not have the time for it with blogging and stuff. The other reason...I'm texting impaired. I just can't get the hang of it. I can handle a computer and PDA, but texting no can do unless you want me to take half an hour just to type four words. I grew up when the world was slightly different, like I can't play any of the new video games. I grew up with the original Atari (a joystick and a red button) and loved it. However, I can play computer games.

Thanks,
Texting Impaired One

Hi Clinically - it's all a matter of timing - when you feel ready to spread your network that bit further... Twitter does have a useful search feature that lets you - say - search for people with similar interests. Its a very cost effective way of broadcasting to many quite easily but it hurts when you loose a follower..... know how God feels now!!
