“Between the Assassinations”, Aravind Adiga’s second book ( recall his first novel 'White Tiger' won the Man Booker Prize in 2008?), is a collection of short stories/anecdotes, set in a town in coastal Karnataka, during the period between the assassinations of Indira Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi (the stories have no other relevance to the title).
The pace of the book is like a ride in an auto rickshaw on the Indian roads – racy, dumped mid way, bumpy, provocative, occasionally lethargic etc..

As in White Tiger, Adiga continues to shock the reader with his occasional ‘unprintable’ passages, like in the story of the garment manufacturer, who takes revenge on the visiting corrupt official while unwillingly serving them whiskey by “… unzipping his cotton trousers…bunching the first two fingers… stuck them deep into his butt... brought them out…dipped into glasses of whiskey…” (some bumpy rides could cause vomiting, right?).A few stories, like that of the local editor, are lethargic, like when the auto rickshaw stuck in a traffic jam.
Through out the book, as in White Tiger, Adiga’s perceptiveness, caustic humour, easy language etc.are enjoyable.
