Those Born 1930-1979

READ TO THE BOTTOM FOR QUOTE OF THE MONTH BY JAY LENO. IF YOU DON'T READ ANYTHING ELSE---VERY WELL STATED
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930s, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants &children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We 20 would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms........
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:
'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us...go ahead and delete this.
For the rest of us...pass this on. (You don't have to do this.)

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU THINK OF?

Sarah...do you think you could have survived that type of life?

Posted 3 years ago #

YES I SSURVIVED!!!!

CC can I use this....
I am one of the lucky ones who made it through... being a child of the 60's...
and yes we did all the things you have mentioned...
personally I cant stand the regulations put in place for our own good...
my kids also ate mudpies, my eldest had a snail collection.. not a good smell in 40 degree C days in an closed ice container but hey thats what kids do...lol...

I smoked through most prenancies..(didnt know you shouldnt) they slept however they were comfortable, feed when they were hungry (no 2-4 hours feeds in my house), we had broken bones, skinned knees, stitches, blooded noses, fist fights the whole range... and guess what they are all still here too.....

Of course, you can use this! It was actually a chain email sent to me. I hate those things, but this one was really good. So, I decided to make it a post in the Forum.

"Ok, Missy. Then, this wasn't meant for you to read. ; -) Just rub it in because you are young!!! You do know that I am kidding :-)"

- yes, I know it wasn't meant for me but I read it out of the fun and tried to imagine how life would be for me if I was to be born within that period. Of course, I know you are kidding, what else?

"Sarah...do you think you could have survived that type of life?"

- I might survived. In fact, I think that kids during that time were tougher that kids nowadays.

A very simple example is in school:

A student - done something wrong in school (like not finishing home work/not attending class/not coming to school for no reason)

Teacher - scolded the student and punished him/her

Parents - came and (sued/threatened/scolded) the teacher for (scolding/punishing) their son/daughter

Moral of the story: Kids are spoilt, parents becoming less responsible for the act of their children, teachers are scared of being sued so there is no punishment for students - students (kids) are bold enough to do anything they want!

Hi Sarah,

I liked the way that you responded!! But, you are right about the changes...it feels like no one takes responsibility anymore. It feels like it is always someone else's fault or get away with what you can and if you don't get caught it is okay.

Hehe, thanks.. I have left school for 4 years now and I never step into any University/college/institution for higher learning.. and some people think that is because I am a lousy student/stupid..

Do you want to go back to school?

Posted 3 years ago #

School - oh how time stood still then, it dragged!

Reading all the above how on earth did we survive....oh times were hard....lol - every generation says that though right? In my time, the old days....maybe someone in the early 1930's felt like we do when someone said...hey...that 1849 rush was a hoot?!!?!

But oh, times were hard!

@CC, I thought I have always wanted to go to Uni but then again I realised that it doesn't matter to me anymore, I can always learn on my own. It is not easy for me to go to Uni without the $$$.

changes do happen. I know they are the trace of time , adidas f50 adizero, irresistible and inevitable. the moment I saw my father I should not recognize him.I know he is getting old ,but returning home after more than 4moths,the symptoms of old should have grown beyond my imagination. I felt guilt and regret. I know I am the killer who take away his strength and youth.apparently he was pleased that I arrived so early and brought presents for them. when I was young I always thought he was some kind of tyrant , stern and severe.Nike Mercurial Vapor, I thought he was not approachable and touching.while with years passing by, in the process of my growing up and his getting old , these impression fades and instead it is replaced by words as gentle caring and loving . he played cheese and badminton with me, he would sing with me , he cooked for me , he chat with me , he is tolerant of me.my dear father and all my families , I say sorry for my past fault , I know sometimes I just easily surrender myself to the various temptation, and lose myself and my way. but believe me , I just easily surrender myself to the various temptation, and lose myself and my way. football boots, but believe me ,my experience is added over time and I can preserve my values and trace my path to maturity
