August 8th is National Zucchini Day or Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbors’ Porch Day. This special day was formed due to overzealous planting of zucchini, citizens are asked to drop off baskets of the squash on neighbors’ doorsteps.
Top 20 List for successful sneaking of Zucchini or otherwise ridding yourself of unwanted surplus summer squash
1) Carefully place a dozen or more zucchini in a large, sturdy black plastic trash bag, then add a couple layers of unwanted clothing. Drive to nearest Goodwill or Salvation Army, hand over bag to nearest volunteer. Politely refuse any offered receipt. Leave quickly.
2) Look for out of the way places which have signs posted, “Clean Fill Wanted.”
3) Reserve 1/2 of the space in large, upright freezer, gather all available plastic containers & freezer bags. Drink a vat of your favorite caffinated beverage, in preparation for staying up round the clock to puree large quantities of zucchini. This can then be packaged neatly and artistically labeled: “For Zucchini Nut Bread Recipe.” These packages can be freely given, along with copies of recipe, to anyone on your Christmas list. [Ed. note: I solemnly promise that I will eventually post this recipe.]
4) Under light of full moon, either stark naked or wearing full army camouflage, carrying a machete or any garden implement, run amuck in your zucchini patch, cutting and slashing. Be sure to thank mother nature for her bounty before and after this cathartic experience.
5) Buy a large roll of freezer paper–the kind that sub shops use to, you know, wrap up their subs & other sandwiches. Then proceed to wrap each zucchini which has managed to grow to a foot or more in length. Next time your child has a fundraiser, send him or her out supplied with these phoney subs. Tell child to drop them off with neighbors or relatives and leave quickly. It’s advisable that a responsible adult hover nearby in a get-away car.

It appears that coffee addicts are merely staving off the effects of caffeine withdrawal they’re no more alert than people who regularly do without The millions of people who depend on a shot of coffee to kickstart their day are no more alert than those who are not regular coffee drinkers, say researchers.
A cup of coffee, suggests a study, only counteracts the effects of caffeine withdrawal that has built up overnight.
“Someone who consumes caffeine regularly when they’re at work but not at weekends runs the risk of feeling a bit rubbish by Sunday,” said Peter Rogers, who led the research at Bristol University. “It’s better to stick with it or keep off it altogether.”
Infrequent coffee drinkers who reach for an emergency hit fare no better, experiencing heightened feelings of anxiety – and withdrawal symptoms the next day.
How genetic differences may influence response was also examined. Blood samples were taken from 379 volunteers who were asked to avoid caffeine for 16 hours.

Jumping ahead to 15th Century A.D., pies had spread throughout Europe. The recipes had become very diverse. (In 15th Century A.D.) Animated pies or pyes were the most popular banquet entertainment. The nursery rhyme “Sing a Song of Sixpence… four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie,” refers to such a pie. According to the rhyme, “When the pie was opened, the birds began to sing. Rabbits, frogs, turtles, other small animals, and even small people (dwarfs) were also set into pies, either alone or with birds, to be released when the crust was cut. The dwarf would emerge and walk down the length of the table, reciting poetry, sketching the guests, or doing tricks. (And, I thought it was just a children’s rhyme…now, it creeps me out more)
According to www.thewordly.org, the first recorded, edible crust apple pie recipe was in 1361.The first apple seeds in American came from the Pilgrims in 1620. Mock Apple Pie made from soda crackers instead of apples, was popular during The Great Depression, because apples were hard to obtain.
While it is uncertain to why either of these dates became National Apple Pie Day, it is well known that apple pies are an important part of the American culture with sayings like “as American as apple pie”. From www.theoi.com, the meaning that apples are not originally from the United States, like many of its people, but they adapted into Americans. Apples have been around since ancient times and are even noted in Greek mythology when Ge gave Hera, bride of Zeus, a tree with golden apples.
Even though apple pie is commonly associated with being American, apple seeds were brought over by the Europeans, as no apple trees existed in the Untied States before the time of Columbus. However, apple pies soon began being a part of the culture and history as it is believed that the apple pie and recipe was brought over by the early English settlers. Henry Finck stated a claim that apple pie was an American Nation Dish in his book “Food and Flavor” written in 1913. Making the statement that “The apple pie is ours, as much as our flag”.
According to www.gwinnettmagazine.com Apples pies became highly associated with the US during World War II when the soldier were heading off to war. Soldiers would answer when ask why they were going to war… “for mom and apple pie”. Apple pies have also been involved in a big patriotic ad by General Motors in the 1970s, stating the company was as an “American Tradition just like baseball, hot dogs and apple pie”. Given all the roots, tradition and association to apple pie, it’s no wonder that America celebrates this holiday twice a year. While it there is not an international apple pie day, there are other international apple holidays celebrated.
Apple pie is actually a European creation. The French have “tarte tatin,” the Austrians “apfelstrudel” and the British apple pie.
Apples found their way to the United States via the early British colonists who carried over apple seeds and apple tree seedlings. The apple is a tricky fruit to grow as the characteristics of the mother plant do not necessary carry over to the fruit grown from its seed.
Still, Americans were creating–and writing about–apple pie from the early 18th century onwards. The phrase “as American as apple pie” actually comes from the World War II era where servicemen and women were instructed to answer reporters that they were fighting for “mom and apple pie.”
My cousin makes the best homemade apple pie that I’ve ever had, so I asked him for the recipe. Here was his response:
I don’t really use a recipe. It’s green apples (sliced thin)mixed with a little bit of flour, butter (couple tablespoons), cinamon, and sugar to taste. The apples should be lightly coated. Put it in a pie crust. I usually use the pre-made refrigerated crust or just the basic pie crust recipie. I sometimes put a crumb topping of cinamon, sugar, flour, brown sugar, and butter. Or I lay sliced pieces of crust over the top. I use my moms Better Homes and Gardens cookbook for cook times and the crust recipe.

I’m updating the old coffee badges in an attempt to make this place a worthy site to visit as part of your valuable time online.
Irish Coffee is a 26 year old male from Ireland. Currently writing up four years of research in Systematic Theology, while considering launching a career in life coaching. When it comes to recreation, he is also drawn to books, but this time to the sort of books that read him. GO! Smell the coffee anyone?
Having taken time out today to read all CC’s hard work and post, plus Angela in Canada dropping back in and the one n only Elton John getting back amongst it I’ll be reconnecting with some of the old regulars via Facebook and see if we can crack on and brighten up people’s time online.
With far less time online (with the exception of my daily facebook status update) I’ve been a bit blind to GO! Smell the coffee carrying on after all the initial hard work and thank all for this involvement to date and in the future.

What an appropriate month for GO! Smell the Coffee!! Today is officially National Caffeine Awareness Month…or should I say anti-caffeine awareness month. All of the articles that I’ve read seem to explain the reasons why you should quit…it is an addiction. I call it one of world’s most socially acceptable drug. Please keep in mind that I love coffee and am an avid coffee fan…or is it addict. I can stop anytime…really.

Did you know that an average size espresso drink has less caffeine than the average brewed coffee? Or that coffee comes second only to petroleum as the world’s most widely traded commodity? Caffeine can be found in coffee, decaf coffee, tea, decaf tea, medications, chocolate, sodas, and many other sources. For a child three caffeinated sodas is equivalent to an adult drinking three cups of coffee. It takes about six hours to exit your system.
There are many risks that have been found from intaking caffeine. Some are still in testing phases. It affects the brain in similar ways of cocaine, heroine, methamphetamines as they all produce dopamine which stimulates the please area of the brain and increases adrenaline.
Caffeine increased cholesterol, is artery clogging, highly addictive, promotes heart disease, pancreas and bladder cancers, disturbs our central nervous system, increases risk for hypoglycemia, , increases risk for gallstones. It affects the brains ability to take adenosine which causes sleepiness. It also creates headaches, dehydration, impairs absorption of iron and calcium, causes headaches, and impairs the body’s ability to absorb iron and calcium. Doctors recommend that pregnant women, heart disease patients and those at risk for osteoporosis should not drink coffee.
So, are decaffeinated items better? Even decaffeinated items contain some caffeine. For coffee, some of the processes used to “decaffeinate” produce dangerous carcinogens. However, those that use “naturally decaffeinated” or “swiss water processed” are safe.
The UP side of caffeine research is showing that it does help prevent heart disease and asthma. It also increases the body to produce antioxidants. It increases memory, mixed with carbohydrates replenishes the body faster, decreases risks for colon cancer and cirrhosis of the liver, can stimulate hair growth in those that are balding, decreases post work out pain by 48%, wards off Alzheimer’s disease, eases depression, increases stamina, decreased risk for diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and risk of cavities.
Research at times seems contradictory and are in the beginning stages, but there are some things that are consistent regarding the addictive effect. So, it is up to you.
If you decide to stop drinking coffee or other caffeinated items be prepared as it is a drug with withdrawl side effects. When caffeine intake is reduced, the body then becomes oversensitive to a chemical in the brain (adenosine) relevant to the sleep process, causing blood pressure to drop dramatically, producing an excess of blood in the head area (not necessarily on the brain), and leading to a headache often lasting several days. Other withdrawal symptoms reported are fatigue and muscle pain, irritability, inability to work, nervousness, restlessness, and feeling sleepy, and in extreme cases, nausea and vomiting. Gradual reduction of caffeine intake abates these symptoms.
By the way, I am enjoying my caffeinated coffee here in Southern California and you can’t take it away…it is mine…all mine!!!
