Mary Poppins!
Dubai Airports has tightened screening for Swine Flu by installing thermal imaging cameras in Arrivals.nIn a statement, the owner/operator of Dubai International Airport said it was working closely with the Department of Health to prevent the entry of Swine Flu, or H1N1 influenza, as it is also known as the world approaches 1,000 confirmed cases.
The thermal imaging cameras are screening passengers arriving from affected areas and airlines are informing passengers onboard aircraft of the screening at the airport.
“Expert medical care will be available at hand if required,” said an airport spokesperson. “If any suspected cases are identified, they will be transported to Airport Medical Centre for further tests and handled accordingly,” the spokesperson added.
I wonder what R2D2 & C3PO would say if confronted with H1N1. Seeing as C3PO can speak millions of languages surely he could get through to the root of the problem. Afterall, back in the 70’s the metallic duo teamed up to warn us against the perils of smoking:
Whatever next, buffering issues with R2 and the family guy?
Share your H1N1, C3Po and R2D2 concerns right here. Cheers and May the forth (that was yesterday) be with you.

For the second clip of the “Family Guy” embedding is disabled. So copy this link

Then, paste it in the url and go….It is worth it!!
Really, enjoyed the clips. I had forgotten about the no smoking PSA!!!
Thanx CC – changed it to a url!
I’d never seen the non smoking one…
Thermal cameras where common place at all international airports in China until only a few years ago. They were introduced during the SARS outbreak. Quite a nice unobtrusive way to carry out a sensible due care check in my humble opinion.
Fair play but how does it ‘ know’ what infection you’re carrying?
‘It’ doesn’t
‘it’ is looking for people with elevated temperature/fever. If you show sings of elevated temperature then you are stopped for further investigatioon.
I passed through a number of times showing outward signs of serious fever – sweating, ill looking, washed out, etc but as it was only a severe hangover from too much ale the night before I was not flagged by the machine. So there is nothing to worry about. The machine is fine.
Ok ok, ta!
Did you write this post entirely because you wanted to say May the fourth be with you?
Anyway, no real concerns where swine flu is concerned, Bloomberg will protect us all.

Hands up on the May 4th excuse….
Thank you Bllomberg,
Hurrah!
I merely commented that it was freezing in the princesses chamber – hoot, whistle, beep – But it’s supposed to be freezing! How on earth you expect her to catch the flu now is beyond my comprehension….
REAL flu, Swine flu or MAN flu?
just to change subject completely, I’d love a ’sat nav’ with the voices of C3PO and R2D2 giving the directions….. “my obtuse little friend suggest you take the second exit’… ha ha love it
‘Oh really, Marster Luke’
So I am curious. Is this screening process effective? We are checking for a disease that takes 2 to 7 days to manifest (mean=4 days), yet can shed virus after the second day. This means that someone can get sick, travel through two or three airports and coming into close contact with dozens of people, and still get through the screening station undetected; and this is with oral, tympanic, or temporal thermometry. Those countries using thermographic scanners are using technology ill suited at best and frequently wrong.
The expenses for these efforts would be better suited in treating the ill or funding the distribution of the eventual vaccine.
Agreed Jace I hadn’t looked at is from that perspective, although when I returned from the UK to Abu Dhabi the thermographic image made me feel like I was on the film Predator!
