The Garden Remembers Them

Posted on April 25th, 2009 by A/C

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them

Each has won a glorious grave – not that sepulchre of earth wherein they lie, but the living tomb of everlasting remembrance wherein their glory is enshrined. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of heroes. Monuments may rise and tablets be set up to them in their own land, but on far-off shores there is an abiding memorial that no pen or chisel has traced; it is graven not on stone or brass, but on the living hearts of humanity.
Take these men for your example. Like them, remember that prosperity can be only for the free, that freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.

The above words by Pericles, written well over two thousand years ago, long before the first ANZAC Day, but only a stone’s throw from Gallipoli are as poinant today as the day they were written.

I am proud to be an Australian.

Hi A/C .. that was a surprise – as I expect to see those words in November. They are so evocative .. Thank you for reminding us about ANZAC day.

  2. Much blood has spilled for freedom for that I am respectful and grateful. Let us never take for granted what men have done for our freedom and may we never take freedom for granted.

That is so true, What makes Gallpoli so tragic is it was a total balls up from the before they landed.
      Freedom does have it price.

    G’day A/C.
I am sure that you government recognises and helps your ex servicemen

Unlike the UK and the Gurkhas.
The Gurkhas volunteered from Nepal and won 26 VCs

The vicious little heroes are at the moment being crapped on by the UK even after all they have done

We have a similar argument happening with the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels oh New Guinea.
Much like the Ghurkas our troops would have been hard pressed to do what they were there for. Hopefully our Government will fix it and make ammense

I know of a coupe of aussies who went to ypres for the march yesterday

the ghurkas are treated disgracefully by the govt over in the uk. there is an on-line petition you can join to voice your displeasure.

the thing is the gurkhas were always on our side and aren’t allowed in- the indians on the other hand were/are a right nuisance and yet are welcomed with open arms by the govt.
