well done polybore. Certainly beat off stiff competition.

Erm, no idea what your caption means but for off the wall Python surrealism guess it works.

  2. Jim says:

    ‘Beat off stiff’…

Do we HAVE to go there?

  3. polybore says:

Excellent news. Thank you. Looking forward to giving the flowers to a hard pressed and extremely deserving Mrs Polybore.

At the risk of removing any amusement factor from polybore’s caption here is how it was arrived at for comment no.1

The caption is a deliberate miss quote of a famous Mae West line. Without going into gruesome details. Think risqué, a man’s trousers and, when in vicinity of an attractive lady, something in the trousers possibly going hard. Lets ignore the “stiff” and “beat off” as Jim says. lol

A bowl is hard (essential for joke) and polybore thinks petunias are funny, largely because of Douglas Adams, and well, this is GoSmell the flowers had to get a flower in somehow.

    • Jim says:

Will send you that free flowers code!

As a bonus here’s the last Douglas Adams interview:

    • O'DB says:

      OK. Clarified.

Got the Mae West quote re-working. As you allude explaining humour destroys it, but surely the aforementioned hard object should at least be tubular/phallic in shape. A vase maybe, but a bowl? (I know, I know, you’re name’s not Shirley & explaining humour, etc., blah)

But seemed very lateral/obtuse in relation to the pic; to nick an Americanism & bastardisation of our beautiful language it was highly decontextualised.

With this in mind I think I’ll submit my entry for the next Flowers Caption Contest now before seeing it:

The squirrel jumped over the fence; the fence was made of daffodils.

Anyone smell/taste sour grapes? (That’s not part of my submission for the next caption comp, so please don’t add the words to my 20 word total).

    Hi Polybore – nicely explained.

    Congrats on your win.
