Success versus failure, flower? I’m redundant!

Posted on February 7th, 2009 by Jim

Hi flower people!

Jim here in Dubai having just been made redundant. No pay off, no notice and that is the way it is. That’s what smelling the flowers is all about though, right? Overcoming adversity….

‘Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm’
                                                                                          – Winston Churchill

It could be worse – I could be dead:

So we dust down and get back in the race, right?

Comments welcome and DO watch the Al Pacino clip above as I regroup and come to terms with cracking on.

    Hi Jim

Crumbs and Crikey! Sounds like it came as one helluva shock.

We were having a conversation just the other day at work, ruminating about those who had gone onto wonderful and fulfilling things – big success stories after being made redundant and all proudly proclaiming it was the best thing that had happened to them etc.

I’ve had my fair share of redundancy myself. I think if you can get over the initial “i’m not worth anything to anybody” feelings of rejection quite quickly then you stand a very good chance of moving on to better and bigger things.

Get back on that horse m’lad. What’s the worst that can happen? you fall off? well been there done that so you’ve nothing to loose and anything to gain.

    • My husband, Tony was made redundant just before his 50th birthday after 24 years with a company who had promised a big pay-out, but it was taken over by Lord Weinstock and the terms were changed. We had reached rock bottom in life, so there was no where else to go, but up. We did something that we would never have done and we turned a very negative situation into a positive one. We had a plan! We had a goal! We had a dream! … If I had not written this book, then all of what we had learnt, would have been wasted, and I would have always looked back and wondered why I hadn’t. Did we find the secret of true happiness? … Or were we merely chasing dreams?

Thought you might need some help with the job hunting – seems being a doctor’s a pretty versatile occupation to get into….
Funs and laughter – the best medicine.

LOL – cheers Jonathan…keeping the old chin up for sure…

Tis the only way and thanks for your note.

      • Keep your chin up Jim!

I have been made redundant 3 times in my life and each time it has been the best thing possible and I have gone to something much more suited for me at that stage of my life.

At least Everton keep winning! And they beat your arch rivals Liverpool in the cup. Every cloud has a silver lining :-)

Hi Jim, Sorry to hear your news – there’s the global economic downturn being made very real, unfortunately.

Its not something that I’ve had to deal with personally, but I’ve had to watch as many good friends were made redundant at one company I worked for. Not particularly pleasant. But I’m sure, given your great attitude to life and adventurous spirit, you’ll find your way to something wonderful.

Sending lots of good thoughts and prayers for a fantabulous new job for you!!

as Winston also would say… “KBO, lovey!”

  5. Hello Jim,

We have just published an article JUST FOR YOU on our blog, ‘We Are One World Healing’.
It’s called ‘How God tells you it’s time for a change’.
Tell me what you think of it, and I hope it helps you.

    Congratulations and good luck!

    • Jim says:

Will check it out Astrid Lee….

Thanks for the alternative way of looking at this!

so ‘god’ has put him through the pain of redundancy?? not very nice is it really??

do you think god allowed the fires in australia to punish man for some medieval concept of sin

  6. Bo Snr says:

    Hello James.
Sorry to hear about the work.
But Everton beat Liverpool so anything could happen
This has got to be done

  7. Bo Snr says:

    Hello again Jim.
When I am feeling down in the dumps not being able to walk far.
I think of the Paralympians and I realise that there is bugger all wrong with me.
I am just getting ready to walk to the Nags Head
There are plenty of seats on the way for me to rest

  8. Gareth in Thailand says:

Bloody typical Jim, had they told you a few days earlier you could have extended your golfing holiday in Thailand. That’d have been quite handy for both of us. You need a job, my teak patio set needs its annual coating of teak oil, that’s a solid 4 hours at £5 an hour you missed out on, who knows my orange tree needed repotting as well, could have been 5 hours and being a generous old soul I’d have probably thrown in a couple of Chang’s as well.

    • Jim says:

LOL Gareth…the morning I landed back from Thailand was when I was told…

‘We thought it best you at least enjoy the golf trip’ said CEO.

‘How considerate’ I thought as I was asked to clear my office, return the car and go forth on now redundancy pay as I was still on ‘ probabtion’…

Learning from it already…..weighing up cliches right now!

I guess everyone around the world has been challenged by the economy and it is not just in America. I really do hope some good comes out of this. Just remember when one door closes 10 more open so just look at all the open doors and pick the one that is right for you. You will be ok and you will find something even better than what you had before. Just believe in yourself. You can do it.

    Love and Blessings,

  12. vrtulobjeq says:

Yes, hope is all we may have.

  13. Kathleen says:

So sorry to hear about your shock. It’s true that many are affected by this rotten economy. I agree with AngelBaby – look for those doors to open – it always happens.
