Yes, but it is the depth, length of time, interfering with daily activities, number of symptoms and duration that make the difference. However, there is dysthymia (http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis/p20-md04.html) which is a constant low-grade depression. This also responds to treatment which may be therapy and/or medications.

Yes our interests change over time, I don't like playing with dolls, Barbie or skipping rope anymore. LOL. The key is having enjoyment in your interests at the moment.

Major changes, loss, hospitalization, etc can be factors in developing depression.

I'm drawn back to your post CC and reading the list of symptoms:

persistently sad, anxious or irritable mood
pronounced changes in sleep, appetite, and energy
difficulty thinking, concentrating and remembering
physical slowing or agitation
lack of interest in or please from activities that were once enjoyed
sleeping too much or can’t sleep
feelings of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness and emptiness
recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders and chronic pain.

I guess most of us feel some of this from time to time....the one where ' lack of interest in activities once enjoyed' is a key one although we do evolve as our interest move on, right?

Ok, off to play with my action man / GI Jo now!

Jim,

Please read my response to Sarah regarding suffer at some point in our lives. (I don't like the word suffer as it infers that we are victims which we are not...I have a whole post about that that I could post one day...it is a pet peeve of mine).

I'm glad that you love the quote because it is something that my very own brain wrote! :-)

No, not everyone has depression once in a while. As stated in part I, it is normal to have the blues now and then, but if you look at the symptoms of depression in part II those are quite severe as you need to have several of these everyday for at least two weeks. Depression is quite prevalent, but not everyone gets it.

Part of the difficulty that I find is that many people have your view point and think that they undersand it. When in fact, it is much different, more painful and lasts much longer than others expect.

I am glad that you have not died from depression, but some counseling may help you even if you are not depressed.

Lots of info there CC and enlightening - had no idea E Mcgregror & JK Rowling 'suffered'.

Do we all suffer at some point in our lives, I wonder?

Loving the quote you ended on:

"Under the least expected conditions the beauty of the flowers come out from the snow just as those with Depression can also push through seemingly unsurmountable circumstance if you show compassion and support."

Thank u.
