Yep, it’s real. My mom watches it every year and I think my old high school band got to go out there and play in the parade a few years back. It’s as real as roses…

It really is amazing. Right after the parade they go to a viewing area where you can pay to see all the floats up close and have your questions asked. They are there for I thing 3-4 days. Then, demolition and salvaging all they can. I couldn’t find to verify, but since all the material has to be organic, I vaguely remember that they are recycled in some way. But, everything else is saved to be used maybe later on. Tomorrow morning, they start on designing the floats for this 2010!!

I watched it this morning and they estimate that 1.5 million lined the parade route…that is a lot of people and this is the 120th year. There are permanent markings on the streets for the parade. Most of these floats can hold dozens of people if that helps with perspective. They are huge and they all must be able to fold down to get under a freeway overpass. That is hardly ever seen on television.

Marching Koala’s sound so cute. To a global band that seems like that would be really cool to have seen that emerge.
