Go! Smell and Taste the Peking Duck…

Posted on July 30th, 2007 by Jim

We recently came across this recipe for Peking Duck and it sounds absolutely tasty!  Has anyone tried the Peking Duck before?  We’d love to hear how it tasted and how its meant to be eaten actually.

Our fellow blogger over at Food Mayham tried it in a restaurant in New York and said the chef very kindly cut up the duck and served it in correctly made wraps to eat. We’ve also heard that its served with pancakes?  Though we’re tempted by the thought of this delicious treat we flower smellers probably won’t be stopping in at New York soon, so we’ll have to see if there are any places near Dubai that serve the dish.

Lost count of the number of times I’ve eaten this. I can buy it pretty much in any restaurant and even in kit form from the supermarket (duck meat, pancakes, hoi sin sauce, onion and cucumber, they will strip the meat from the duck in front of you so you know its fresh and the whole duck).

In a restaurant you get the whole thing, head and feet included as the feet are a delicacy – can’t see why myself though. Normally the head is served without the tongue as duck tongue is a speciality dish (also goose tongue) if you get the chance try either, they are fantastic.
There are a number of restaurants in Beijing that specialise in this (but most Chinese cities will have it no offeR) and certainly they are much better than the ones in Europe and other parts of China – if you get over to Beijing ask around for the best one, you won’t regret it, delicious.
The locals will also teach you how to make, wrap and eat a duck pancake using only chops sticks – no fingers allowed. Its not that difficult if you have a reasonable skill level with Kuai zi – ?? (chop stick).

A friend of mine in Australia always begs me to go and eat Chinese so he can order this as his missus won’t let him order it when they eat as she thinks ducks are cute – mad as cheese that woman.

‘Duck or grouse’ is the sign often found in country pubs in the Midlands, on a beam in an olde worlde pub.

    Not funny.

Duck only works in a thai red curry…too fatty for me, brings on the Rennies.

Pancakes—oriental form-are close to flour tortillas. Sort of a cross between flour tortillas and crepes–roll up the shredded duck with hoisin sauce–yummmmmmm.
