Arvind here from a blustery, wet autumnal day in London.
I have had this house plant for many years now, a “Christmas Cactus” pnat, so called as it flowers every year around Christmas time i.e end December.
It is an amazing plant as from the thorny looking shoots sprout the most delicate pinkish-white flowers as per the above picture, taken this morning. Every year since I have had the plant, the flowers have appeared end December / early January onwards.
This year however the plant is in full bloom – and it also seems to have more flowers than every before.
So how do you explain this? A sign of global warming, just a confused plant or something even more sinister?!
What other odd seasonal changes have you noticed in your life?
Do share…

Anticipation!
I always believe in translating every thing into it’s highest possible power/energy.
This is a sign that this Holiday season — there will be more Love.
GDay Arvind..
Nice plant…. we have these too in NSW, its to wet down here….
seasonal changes I can comment about NSW as thats what I am use to.. Tassie is still very new to me…
I used to prune my roses in July, but then had to move this forward as by July they were blooming… the plants that would flower for Summer had started to bloom in winter, and then again in summer, veges where hard to gauge as they would grow and stop.
Winter getting warmer, Summer getting much hotter..
Down here in Tassie, we had snow yesterday on the mountain, no frost here yet, rain rain and more rain….
The locals are saying the winters are much milder each year, with the town being cut off for less time each year, its much warmer each winter than the year before….
For us in Tassie its not a bad thing, but for the east coast of Oz its worrying..
LAst night in QLD 145,000 homes lost power, one guy died and another rescued when flash flooding went through, and a huge thunder storm past over…. and then look at the fires in the US which is what we can expect in summer as temp go over the 40 degree C for days on end with no rain in site… a few years ago we lost the outter suburbs of Canberra before that near Sydney.. this year the entire east coast of NSW is on high alert because of the amount fuel…
So seasonal change many, yearly changes huge and its not going away.. time to adjust, and get use to it I think…
Arvind,
Living in Southern California, all plant life gets confused. The beginning of this week was cool and rainy. Now, it is hot, low humidity and wildfires all around. Our roses bloom year round if we don’t prune them. One Christmas it was in the 90 degree range and the next year was cold and rain storms. So, everything is always oddly seasonal. You never put anything away, but your real winter clothing that we wear maybe a week or two out of the winter season. Mostly, fall and spring clothing works and sometimes summer. However, our fruit trees do follow the seasons…yum.

The great seasonal change for my life in Thailand passing from Summer to Autumn and now winter was I changed from wearing shorts and a T shirt to wearing shorts and a vest top.
Lucky you Gareth!
This morning the weather has really changed here in London and it is very cold compared to the weekend. I am now wearing 3 layers rather than just 2. Another 5 months of this – if we are lucky…
Here in Long Island New York winter seems to be upon us one moment and then suddenly it gets all warm and humid. Signs of the times I guess. As for me I have a jade plant that I have had for years, given to me by my Mother…..it has NEVER flowered in all the years that she had it and for some reason or another this year it blossomed all over in a spray of beautiful whitish pink flowers…..
I like blue collar goddesses view…hoping that all those tiny delicate flowers just translate into the beautiful love that can come along if I allow it!
Seasonal change is very apt at the moment Arvind. It rained in Dubai yesterday – about a month earlier than normal – and it was wonderful! There was a shamal (sand storm) the day before so everything was dusty and dirty and the rain just settled everything down and washed away all the dust.
So with the cooler weather now here, I am going to do the same and clear away all my Dust!
It is still hard to think that Christmas is around the corner when it is still 30 degrees outside.
How the Aussies do it is beyond me! ANy tips AC?
My grandma has a christmas cactus the size of a small car. Ok, maybe not that big, but it is huge.
Exaggerating again Zack?!
Does your grandma’s Xmas cactus flower too? “Huge” flowers no doubt
Oh yes!! Last time I was at her house which was about a month and a half ago, the thing had at least 25 or 30 huge pink flowers.
The thing’s also getting a little dusty though.
Hi Arvind,
A prickly topic that!
In Dubai is rained for a couple of hours the other morning – a rare occurrence that helps clear the sandy air here!
*Replace IS with IT!!!
Ooops.
