GO! Smell Comfort On Chocolate Covered Anything Day!!

Posted on December 17th, 2008 by Clinically Clueless

I absolutely love chocolate!!!  And, it is probably my number one comfort food.   Especially high grade, expensive, dark chocolate.  I’ve become a little of a chocolate snob when it comes to eating and baking with chocolate, but I taste the difference and sometimes it is a lower grade that tastes better in a recipe.  There are tons of things you can cover in chocolate like a room of chocolate, a shoe, a car, a table, a person etc…  The list goes on, so I’m going to tackle only the edible things.  Those are much more fun and actually a larger list.

Pork Loin Stuffed with Sweet Caramel Filling

People will dip or cover anything with chocolate.  (Oh, I get it National Chocolate-Covered ANYTHING Day.  Sorry, I must have been on a chocolate high because I’m not joking.)  Some of the common things that are covered in chocolate are pretzels, nuts, strawberries (pictured below), fresh fruit, dried fruit, popcorn, bananas, ice cream, sunflower seeds, raisins, coffee beans, potato chips, cookies including fortune cookies, graham crackers, gummy candies, cheesecake, variety of vegetables, various candied peels (orange, ginger, etc…), and a variety of breakfast cereals.

Then, there are the slightly unusual to strange items such as chili peppers (first picture), twinkies, tortilla chips, figs, soy beans, beets, fruitcake, Key lime pie, other sweet treats like Peeps and Twinkies, pickles, french fries, garlic, pumpkin, cactus, pork rind, basil, seaweed, kimchi, Haggis, hot dogs, bacon, cheeseburger, sausage, rattlesnake, alligator, various red meats, pork loin stuffed with sweet caramel filling (an old French recipe & pictured above), and a hollow chocolate bar filled with stew.  Which in a way makes sense as chocolate is used to make savory sauces for dishes.

Chocolate Covered Scorpions

Now, there are the things that made me squirm and almost abandon this post.  In California, they are FDA approved and hand grown food grade live critters.  If you are squimish, don’t read that people eat chocolate-covered ants, crickets, larva, locusts, scorpions (pictured right), cockroaches, grub worms, slugs, grasshoppers, squid, and curry cricket cupcakes.

Okay, let’s talk about some wonderful things about chocolate.  Chocolate has many “feel good” components such as sugar, caffeine, andamide (the blissful chemical) and the best is theobromine.  Theobromine is a mild stimulant and is thought to uplift mood and derived from Greek meaning “food of the gods.”  I must agree with that.  Chocolate comforts and soothes me.  At work, they used to throw chocolate to me (or was it at me?) if I was in a bad mood or not feeling well.  Hmmm…I thought they cared, but maybe it was all about them?

Heaven~Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Food items that are comforting or I find being thrown at me when I wake up on the wrong side of the bed include chocolate, coffee, non-fat lattes, rice crispy treats, chocolate covered strawberries (my heaven), chocolate covered rice crispy treats, chocolate covered graham crackers, chocolate chip-cookies, fudge like brownies, chocolate cake, Kettle corn, tortilla chips, tortillas, and real Mexican bean & cheese burritos.

What other unique chocolate covered edibles can you think of or have you had especially from other countries?

What food items do you find comforting in your garden?

All comments are welcome.

Does CC stand for Chocolate covered for this post :-)

I once ate too many choc covered coffee beans in Peru and they hit me hard – pulse raced, talked rapidly and wanted to breakdance! I believe it was the Mayans who discovered choc through cocoa so we have them to thank /blame?!

Chocolate is always my favourite.. especially Belgian chocolate.. but I would not eat ants, crickets, larva, locusts, scorpions (pictured right), cockroaches, grub worms, slugs, grasshoppers, squid, and curry cricket cupcakes covered in chocolate..

I bet the Mayans didn’t discover Lindt Milk Chocolate bar with Creme Brulee.

    I have!

I’m not even a chocolate person but I have feeling this is about to change.

    God Bless you Lindt.

  5. Any comfort food besides chocolate? Like I’m sick right now and really don’t want chocolate or coffee. However, udon or tortilla soup or a really good basic chicken soup (white meat only…yes I discriminate) sound good. I won’t refuse chocolate and I am drinking coffee though. :-)

  6. very nice article thank you very much….

I’m hooked on a dark chocolate square with raspberry in the middle – one a day (my nose is growing like pinnochio)- my favorite has become Ghiradelli chocolate, and I’m having one now.

It would not be the same with squid in the middle, so no thank you!
