Work baby work…

‘Attempt the impossible in order to improve your work.’  – Betty Davies

Thanks to Cathrerine in California for sending us in this quote. Examples where anyone has lived by this quote?

Are you enjoying your job and giving 110%?

Are you counting the hours away or really relishing what you do?

Retirement. Can’t say we’re fans of that word. Maybe old bloggers finish and e-tire?

Nah, I waste loads of time blogging on web sites where the admin guys get a bit upset with flirting and Dubai residents bait each other over smoking, building, drugs and politics.
Occasionally I provide the odd bit of project management, engineering and manufacturing advice to car developers.

  2. Greek Goddess says:

If I may, I’d like to change the quote slightly:

‘Attempt the impossible in order to improve your LIFE’

Whatever we do at work, should be helping us in this direction!!!

  3. Mel says:

    Great quote, I quite agree.

But I guess it all comes down to work life balance. . . .

But how do you get that balance?

  4. Dubaidave says:

    Greek Goddess.

About time we had a bit of quality on board the blog. I assume you’re into Socrates, Plato et al or is your blog id a cover name for a seamstress in Saudi?

Mel – work life balance easier said than done in the ‘we want everything yesterday’ world of skin deep Dubai.

  5. Sarah says:

Yes but DDave whatever our envirnoment it is us that control our own thoughts and emotions. Right?

  6. Dubaidave says:

Potentially but external influences can help or hinder the process.

Happiness is within me especially after a couple of pints after work.

  7. Camelmaster says:

It is a great shame you need the numbing effects of alcohol to feel at one with yourself.

  8. Greek Goddess says:

It’s great to see we’re all (well…almost all) on the same page! :)

To answer DDave’s question, no, I’m not a seamstress in Saudi. Can’t say that I can actually recite Socrates or Plato though…

I have to agree with both Mel and Sarah, although I am finding it increasingly difficult to a) not be affected by the general environment b) to find that balance we’re all looking for…

But hey,…I’ve started “smelling the flowers”. There is hope!!

  9. Dubaidave says:

Camelmaster WHAT is the problem with a couple of drinks as a form of self reward after 6 days of slogging in out in one of the fastest growing cities in the world? Nothing – my choice and nothing shameful about it.

Greek Goddess you don’t need to recite S or P as you seem to have access to your own wisdom unlike Camelmaster. I guess with general environment your referring to the endless dust, traffic and shallowness or is that me wallowing in self pity? Hmmm.

  10. AngryFromEllesmerePort says:

    Hippies!

  11. Greek Goddess says:

I don’t see any self pitty DD – just a bit of pessimism maybe? Maybe you’ve been here for a bit too long?!

It’s the shallowness I find particularly difficult to deal with. It’s getting to me…but having said that, I think that after being here for a few years we decide what/who surrounds us. (outside the workplace that is. Unfortunately, this part is out of our control. Actually, I think it’s completely “out of control”!). It’s taking me a while, but I think I’m on the right track!

  12. dubadave says:

GG – Pessimism or realism, socrates versus plato, east meets west – all this during my lunch when I’m pretending to be working. They (whoever ‘they’ are) define stress as things that we can’t control, stuff that’s outside our sphere of influence, getting out of control. So technically if we can’t control it then we have to roll with it – out of control it goes during this hyper active desert town.

Angry (or is it angsty) ellesmere post – Hippies? Do enlighten us.

Focusing on the now is they key – so – KFC or healthy salad for tomorrows lunch? Oh the choice!

  13. gareth in italy says:

errm wasn’t this about retiring, you’ve lost the plot a little bit me thinks.

  14. Mel says:

Welcome back Gareth – where’ve you been?

The post may have started about retirement, but this is so much more interesting – stop being a party pooper!

What is retirement anyway? Who wants to sit in front of the fire with slippers at hand, dribbling for the rest of your days? I would rather not want to retire because I am doing what I want to be doing and don’t want to stop!

If people are so desperate to retire, maybe they should evaluate their life, before their life retires them permanently?

Hmmm. . . how did the coaching go Gareth we are all waiting with baited breath?

  15. Sarah says:

Dribbling in front of the fire is down to personal choice. Maybe that is the way to go? Why work, work and work. Nowaday with computers they call it e-tiring. Old folks with their own e-buisness.

  16. Dubaidave says:

Selling pipes & slippers on line?!!?

  17. gareth in italy says:

Hope to get to Arvind at the weekend between appointments with Stella.

After working hard I think driblling is fine for retirement, its a question of what (or who) you dribble over. I intend to be nowhere where a fire or slippers are needed – dribbling on a beach in hot weather, thats more like it.
But as Steve Wright said ‘I intend to live forever – so far so good’

  18. the strongest ever says:

Work in the office… Work at home… I love it…

  19. Yeah, you can’t put a good blogger down.
