Go Smell the Insomnia…

Posted on August 8th, 2008 by Funkygirl012003

Hi all,

For the past three nights I’ve had terrible insomnia.  Blame it on stress or totally screwing up my sleep cycle with working late hours but it’s there and I just late in bed for hours.  Eyes closed, thinking about sleep until I’m numb on one side and roll over to lie on the other side.  I usually fall asleep about five or so giving me just enough time to experience many weird dreams before getting up for the day.

INSOMNIA by Eamonn Ryan.

So, I’m looking for tips to help me get to sleep cause counting sheep isn’t working, nor are more complicated kinds of math.  What do you guys do to get to sleep?  Bring me your tired, your weary, your fatigued stories…

A big fat splanging spliff should do the trick. Pile it up with some white russian or Mazzar, works every time for me.

I’m not rubbing anything in Funky but I’ve never had a problem with sleeping (well, the odd tossing and turning for 20 minutes but thats it) but try reading.

And failing that, try Gareth’s suggestion. If you don’t sleep, at least yoou’ll have a laugh trying.

  3. Elton John - Drama Queen says:

George Michael records are guaranteed to do it they are.

  4. Urban Pagan says:

benzodiazepene 20mg half an hour before bed.

    GDay there Funky

only 3 nights of no or little sleep…
let me know when you reach the 4 or 5 month then you know your alive and wish you werent… :p
    I tell you..
Both Hubby and I are and have been insomniacs since we where kids..
normally hubby has about 3-4 months where he cant sleep (sometimes longer), till the sun is rising then he sleeps for about 4 hours and does it again.. he does get about an hour in the evening if he is lucky but not often…
about the same time he is starting to sleep more regularly I start being more awake… with failing asleep around 4-5 am then back up about 7am…. I dont sleep during the day just cant do it… mine last anything from 2-7 months… I am starting the cycle again at the moment…
we can remain in a normal sleep pattern usually for only a month or so…. then it starts over again…. it has to do with daylight savings time changes which can be the starts of the disruption…
the only way either of us have found to get some sort nomal sleeping pattern back is to stay up for a day or two or three… (yes we do this when the sleep is finished) then exhaustion takes over and you sleep and sleep…. however the trick is to have a loud alarm set away from your bed set at a normal time to awaken….

it can be torture but it works for us….
    Godd luck….

    • Agh, I’ve only done that once thank goodness. It was about six years ago and I have first developed a nasty case of tinnitus which was most likely the culprit.

Sorry that you’ve got such a terrible cycle going on there. Does daylight savings cause that much of a problem down under? I’m completely ignorant of geography and all that…

I dont know if it is the cause but our sleep cycle suffers….
down here in Tassie it will still lightish around 10pm…. and mornings it is early….
I find the kids the hardest.. because it is still light and they have to go bed… its a bugger

  7. I feel you pain Funkygirl…I often suffer from terrible bouts of insomnia…A trick I learned is pushing your ears closed until you can hear the blood flowing through…..try your hardest to listen for a bout 15 minutes…concentrating only on the sound…usually I can fall asleep after this…..

  8. Jim & Em says:

Sorry about your non sleep light funky!

How about not sleeping for 1 week – it’ll work wonders on the 8th night.

Is it a caffeine thing? They say herbal tea can help ;-)

  9. I’ve always had disrupted sleep and once it goes past a certain point I need serious medications and even with that it doesn’t get me enough sleep. However, for transient problems: make sure you have a wind down routine that does not include anything to do with the computer or work, keep the same schedule even if you aren’t sleeping, etc. You probably know the same suggestions, but if it continues and starts to interfere with daily life and work, then, talk to your physician.

I try not to have caffeine after 1 pm when I switch to water only. You can also try talking to your pharmacist and see what they recommend…it may not be medication either.

I sure do feel for you. It is so frustrating and being tired just makes it worse. Like, no duh! Good luck to you. Sleep, sleep, sleep…BTW, counting sheep doesn’t work for me because they are too noisy….baa, baa, baa.

you’re counting the wrong breed of sheep perhaps??? (lol)

Its no joke – get up, make a hot milky drink then back to bed. Do you sleep better if you have a window open or have you tried an air purifier?

read for an hour or so does it for me. You could always watch the olympics

  13. i*maginate says:

They say if you can’t get to sleep, try and keep your eyes open as long as possible until you “want” to close them.

One you do, try not to “think” about anything.

    It can work as a last-minute resolve….

-ethical eater – reading keeps me awake if it’s good… lol

  14. i*maginate says:

My problem is I hate going to bed alone. And I hate going to bed. Insomnia’s not the culprit :(

  15. Bridget Jones says:

I don’t have a problem with sleep Funky, I have a problem with waking up!!!

Yep, I’m ver-ry good in bed – I can sleep for days ha! :p

Does that count?! Does that count?! :D
