Mike here,

Above: A 3-D map of the Web showing Domains and connections. Picture from The Opte Project.

History of the web:

1960: ARPANET developed by the US Military

1989: http released into the public domain

1993: Mosaic (Mass-adopted web browser)

Mid-1990s: dot.com bubble which bursts in 2000

Web 2.0 technology: Easy to use technolgy for sharing content

The Read/Write Web (blogs)

So where are we heading?

What are your predictions for the future and how can sites like GO! Smell the Flowers evolve and ride the wave of the ever changing net?

it will all crash in a few years and nobody will be bothered to fix it

    the end

… ever the optimist hey Urban!!

I’m really not sure where it will go Mike. I’d like to think that it will stay as we know it today but of course that ain’t gonna happen. Smaller computers ( iPhone) and the like will be more accessible so that we are not as restricted to stay at home, even though laptops are the go nowadays… it’s not always convenient to take your laptop on an outing.

Love the pic too btw. :)

      Lol!

Not sure whether that will happen but before it does, everything will go on line.

There will essentially be one entertainment system in peoples homes and that will be a PC, everything will be watched, listened to and commanded from that.

Maybe true Urban – but I think Clueless is right in her comment below. The net will crash and then Bill Gates will turn up late after the whole world has stayed in waiting for him to turn up and he will draw in his breath and go … hmm … tricky … yes I can fix it, but it’s going to cost you mate.

We will then ignore him, try to fix it ourselves, and mess the whole thing up.

a mate of mine knows someone high up in the creative dept of apple- one of the gadgets he’s prototpying at the is a phone/ipod thingy that also through the comp onto a screen controls the telly , mac, and other appliances in the house.

    very good.

  4. I have this theory that all aerospace companies will eventually merge into one big one and Bill Gates will purchase that. Then he will cause the Web to malfunction via his Microsoft products. His company will be the only one to fix it and he will figure out a way to own the Web and further his venture into taking over the world. (insert evil laugh)

    here are my predictions:

    1. Web everywhere: with high bandwidth wireless technologies, namely 3G & WiMax not only will you be connected from everywhere via mobile devices, everything will be connected into the web: your car, your fridge, etc.
    2. No more software to buy and install: everything will be a website
    3. Growth of virtual worlds: we have seen a few like Facebook, Twitter, this place, etc, but there will be more and you can be what you want on each of them
    4. Multimedia growth: better bandwidth will bring richer media. Blogs too will be more n more about video blogging.
    5. Touch n Feel web: next step with touch screens is likely to be “surfacing” where each object you touch will produce a feel
    6. Bigger monitors, Multiple monitors: next gen will use 2, 3 or more monitors
    7. Improved virtual experience: we have seen this with Wii Gaming; this will expand
    9. Human Search engines: Google will diminish in value as human tagged & rank search will emerge, beating the machines
    10. The web will never beat good ol’ human intelligence and wit

I can see the net becoming wireless fully… but without the hand held devices…. small eye patch devices that fit on your sunny’s or even implants which allow to access the web by merely thinking….
I recently saw an invention through a company which allows people who are disabled physical including speech, can wear a hat of sorts and think the movement and the computer did it…. the host tried it on and it worked… electrical impulse technology… amazing and scary….
I really do think we are heading into the Brave New World with a blindfold on….
Microchipped babies, internet implants, constant GPS Locators, CCTV monitoring everywhere….
If only I had a Persecution Complex I really could prove that I am not mad and I am really being watch…. lololol…

You guys! too much Arnie films (he’ll be back you know – apparently) with a side helping of Lucas (if the future is that badly written, count me out!) – small joke – ha ha – I heard an interview on the radio the other day and this guy (who apprently invented web 2.0) was on about the next step – imaginatively titled web 3.0 (not web 2.5 as has been rumoured).

He said something along the lines of at the moment we only read pages, click a few things, buy a few photo gifts from those lovely people at Fabulous Photo Gifts etc and web 3.0 was about our pc’s interacting with the technology more so for instance, at present a date is read as just a date, an address as just an address.

So what if your pc/browser could recognise a date or address and open and add it to your diary/contacts book etc – notice directions and open a map program – this will be the direction of web 3 – smart.

As a bit of a self confessed gadget person, I still can’t use predictive text on my mobile – i just keep getting strange words – so i think web 3 has a long way to go but it will be interesting to see it develop.

For the future, smaller, more portable browsers (like the i-phone) with world wide wifi – hey that’s what the www stands for (i thought of it first so its mine – pay me if you want to use it!).

Troublesome teenagers in gangs – cut out knife and binge drinking and give em all a free i-phone.
