Does a little power go to your head?

Posted on June 7th, 2008 by Gareth inThailand

As Bo is getting married next month my wife and myself intend to visit the UK. To do this she needs a visa as she is Chinese. She can only apply for a visa in Beijing. The last Friday in May we both went to the visa application centre to do this. There are no English people or people of any authority working there, only processing clerks.

We filled out the (often confusing) 26 page application form – yep, 26 pages folks.

We also submitted, in support of the application, the following;

Photocopy of marriage documents (they said they didn’t need originals), ownership papers for our house in China, ownership papers for our house in England, my passport (only a copy but they saw the original at the time of application), her passport, her Hukou, a letter from the UK inland revenue (tax) service about me, a letter confirming my job and salary from the company I work for, a personal letter of explanation from myself, my business card and contact details, my mother’s and brother’s contact details in the UK, photocopy of my bank and credit cards (originals seen at the time of application) and a bank statement showing I am fairly solvent.

She has been refused as” You have stated that you are going to staying with your husband’s family. As I cannot be satisfied that you are related as claimed and you have provided no evidence of your own personal finances and have stated on you application form that you are unemployed, I am also am not satisfied you will maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependants adequately out of resources available to you without resource to public funds or taking employment; or will, with any dependants, be maintained and accommodated adequately by relatives of friends. Paragraph 41 (vi) Immigration Rules”

ermmm, my home, bank, salary details and personal letter of guarentee kind of sorted this and of course they could have contacted me for further proof either by e-mail or a phone call, or thought the fact that I attended personally might have been and indicator.

However I will have to contact them on Monday to try and resolve this. I wasn’t surprised as any organisation that can produce a 26 page application form that contains such ingeniously thought out questions like those below is clearly so far out of reality that it may well take a few applications,

Check these out;

visa1.JPGShouldn’t Shouldn’t we already know who these guys are and be hunting for them, not waiting for them to wander into an obscure office in Beijing?

Wow, that’ll fox them. Now I may be wrong but I doubt those that have been or are actively involved in terrorism will openly declare it on a visa form. I would have loved to have been in the meeting/brainstorming that hatched gems like these as questions.

Whilst this has irritated me in a minor way I was expecting it, anyone who dreams up those questions will no doubt find a minor fault in an application so they can exercise a small amount of power. There is no point getting angry or sarcastic with these types of people and departments, all you can do is smile, politely ask for further guidance and persevere until the process is complete. Of course what I’d really like to do is stamp on this guys balls purely to stop him from perpetuating this strand of DNA, we don’t need this sort of jobs worth idiocy in our society.

Anyone else come up against beaurocracy that is inflexible and probably does not accomplish the goals it originally set out to do?

    Hello GIT/GIC.
    I am sure you will persevere and obtain the visa.
    Would a letter from a community councellor help?
    I am sure I will see you at the wedding

      Thanks for the offer but probably not necessary. I need to fill out the appeal form, submit a few more documents and re-submit some that they patently didn’t read. The crazy thing is they claim there was no evidence about our marriage yet the said same people a month earlier were the guys who gave us the necessary papers required by Chinese law for me to marry.
      Another friend of mine who lives in Chongqing and has also married a Chiense girl had the same hassle on her first few visas and got very annoyed with the whole thing. There is no magic formula, it depends on the officer and his mood at the time, a simple phone call or e-mail would have solved his concerns and saved the Brittish taxpayer the unnecessary cost of the appeals process which we will now have to go through (there is no charge to me for an appeal).

        I think Bo might go to the official when he gets the chance (he has a long memory) and kick the s**t out of him

    I guess all you can do is continue until they grant it.. good luck…
    we are having a hassle regards to land size of our house… the plans say one thing, the title says another, the council says another… it looks like we might own the neighbours house as well…. hehehehe..

    GIT outta here! LOL…I know I have seen questions like that before. As if you are going to admit those things if you want to go to another country…they must be dumb…

    Red tape gone mad GIT!

    A huge congrats on your wedding dy – just catching up on posts – all great jobsworth stuff with the paperwork your being bogged down with – where the powers-that-be can treat humans like sheep and suspected criminal sheep at that.

    In all fairness I should point out the consular section of the Beijing embassy does a great job and did go the extra mile for me on a number of other occassions.
    However I do understand your point about the attitude of some, the worst thing is trying to get the buggers on the phone, almost impossible. You have to wonder where they learn this attitude, they all seem to acquire it quickly and to a uniform standard of ridiculousness.
    I will, however, be sparing my wife the treat that is the Northern British holiday resort, it might all be too much for her after Bali and Thailand – don’t want to overawe her.

  9. I can understand the frustration Gareth. My brother married a Phillipino woman about 6 years back now. They married over there, had a child and it took nearly 12 months for her Visa to be granted to come to Australia. They kept asking for all sorts of documentation… it was bordering on ridiculous and finally, they agreed to give the Visa to her by taking a DNA sample from my brother to prove he was my nephews father!! Now that sucks. Hopefully it won’t take that long for your holiday Visa’s.

      I tried to call and ask if the next set of documents I intend to submit would be suitable and was told that;
      We don’t discuss cases.
      I agree that’s fine, I dodn’t wish to discuss the case merely the general requirements.
      We don’t discuss cases.
      OK so can you give a general definition and clarify point X on the web site guide to documentation.
      We don’t discuss cases. Follow the web site guide.
      Agreed, I will do so but can I clarify the requirement X in more detail.
      We don’t discuss cases.
      Understood. Point X states blah blah blah, does that mean blah blah…
      I said we don’t discuss cases.
      Sorry but are you mad? I agreed that and merely had a general question which is not discussing the case merely the requirement.
      Phone hung up at their end.

    Another thing I have always presumed is that computers
    have become a product that each family must have for many reasons.
    They supply you with convenient ways in which to organize households, pay bills,
    go shopping, study, hear music and in some cases watch
    shows. An innovative approach to complete most of these tasks
    is to use a notebook. These personal computers are portable ones, small, highly effective and transportable.
