Go See Australia’s Spine at Work!

Posted on April 10th, 2008 by A/C

spine.jpgThe Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is in China. He is there for four days as part of his 17 day tour…

Just like any good Aussie he is telling them how it is, making the right noises and pulling no punches… but most of all he is being respectful and speaking to the right people.

Shortly Saint Kevin, (as we are calling him) will meet with the President of China and other officials, but he has already causes abit of annoyance with his speech to Chinese Students and prior to his arrival whilst in Washington, where he once again condemned China’s Human Rights abuse and the treatment of Tibet. One thing which appears to be posing the most annoyance isMr Rudd speaks fluent Mandarin and therefore there is no Translators, no way for the Chinese Government to white wash what he is saying…. The people are hearing exactly what is said and they are stunned. Also St Kevin was a diplomate in China for quite some time and has a good understanding of how they work. Yes I am as so many other Aussie’s Proud of our new leader.. the one with a backbone!

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has supported the right of Australians to turn their backs on the Olympic torch relay in Canberra to make a silent protest over China’s crackdown on Tibet. And in a speech in Mandarin yesterday to students at Peking University on the first day of his visit to China, Mr Rudd repeated a blunt warning to China about significant human rights abuses in Tibet. This was despite the Chinese government earlier yesterday delivering diplomatic protests over similar remarks he made in Washington last week calling on China to talk to the Dalai Lama.
Asked about people turning their backs on the Olympic flame in Canberra, Mr Rudd pointedly said Australia was a free country.
“It’s a robust democracy … people can express their point of view in whichever way they want and that’s what’s good,” he said.
Didnt I say that in a recent comment, perhaps he reads flowers

Worst of all He IS NOT Backing down….. YES! A SPINE IN ACTION!

My Question is not about Tibet, nor is it about the Olympics…
Is he going about this the right way?
Talking face to face with China.. being frank and honest, or should he do what the rest of the world is doing and pointing fingers and telling China how naugthy they have been….
Perhaps we will get a more balanced view of what is going on if the leaders talk to each other in person rather than from the pulpit..!

Will there ever come a time when all the “kind hearted” nations of the world boycott America & its allies by preventing their athletes from participating in sports events because of directly or indirectly causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands in the Middle East & also causing the displacement of millions from their homes? Or am I just day dreaming? I really smell hypocrisy here.

Woohoo, sounds like quite the juicy situation going on there. If I were China and a visiting President/Prime Minister started speaking shit about my country in our own language I’d be really pissed about it.

the thing is he had to say something, with everything going on…. the torch comes to canberra next …. now he has got it out of the way, and has acknowledge chinas soveignty in Tibet, … the fact they are still meeting with him shows the diplomacy is still ok… we are watching down here to see what next…. four days and its only day one…. (B) anyone

  3. I haven’t directly heard his speech so I’m not sure in what context and tone it was delivered. What will probably help him no end was he delivered it in Mandarin, explained the action prior to it happening and had the face to do it in person.

As a protest this seems to me to be the way it should be done – rather than physically attacking the runner and thus impeding their human rights, turning your back and ignoring it is far more powerful and will hit home to the people here much harder and will be more likely to get meaningful debate amongst the Chinese, I think they will be stunned if its done correctly. Violently protesting simply galvanises all of the Chinese to support policy in the face of aggression – as I’ve mentioned before, due to historical attorcities the Chinese are fiercely defensive of their country, its borders and its leaders in the face of threats. The current protests are actually making debate and resolution far less likely, the reverse of the desired outcome and is the result of stupidity, lack of understanding and misdirection in the West. Theonly drawback is because of whats happened up until now this protest might get dilluted somewhat, if it had been done first then I think it’d have been exponentially more effective.

I echo DG’s comment, where are the protests in the West about Israel? Who says ETA are wrong to demand a Basque homeland? Why was Cyrpus and Northern Ireland ignored? When are we going to boycott us Brits and the US for our behaviour? Nothing is being done in Zimbabwe, etc.. pure and simple hypocrisy because China is an easy target that does not defend itself.
The US only had one incident – 911 – tiny by comparison with many other countries suffering, yet now assumes the right to intercede both politically and militarily anywhere in the world (supported by us Brits in sychophantic union). China was attacked and invaded by many nations and had lots of people trying to interfere in its internal affairs for hundreds of years, yet they haven’t taken war to the world, have military forces that in the main can only be used for defense and has a none interference policy that we fail to respect (hence we demand they fix Darfur while we do nothing ourselves).

How many actually know the history of Tibet, we seem to think it was some fairy tale land at the end of the rainbow until ‘big bad evil China’ came along. Wrong, it was a feudal system where the few ruled the many and kept them in as much poverty as they could stand.
Thoughout history China has had involvement there, and by this I mean back to the times before we in Europe had even learned how to build mud huts, the US & Australia were over a thousand years from being ‘discovered’ and therefore still exclusively inhabited by their native peoples – what happened ot them and how are we correcting this wrong?

The whole Tibet thing, to me, has huge letters written accross it and the letters spell ‘B A N D W A G O N’

if you can go to abc.net.au you can hear the whole thing…. its not youtube… if not I have part of his speech at aussie link below…
The thing is he was chastised by any chinese officials and had talks with the Premiere today they went 30minutes over with their talks on Tibet… he had to say Australias views on the matter… and he meets with the President in the next day or two.. The whole visit has been about respect and friendship and working together… this approach appears to be working… China has signed an Environmental Pact with Australia and is looking into Free Trade with each other… he seems to be building big bridges…

        • Simplistically,
Brown heroin is normally Asian in origin has had less refining than white heroin, this is why its brown.
During the 80′s people figured out that if you draw up brown heroin solution through a small filter then you could inject the brown version of heroin which was much cheaper. Previously brown heroin was only smoked.

AC – as a strong opiate it’ll take away your physical pain & instill a psychological state close to bliss; considering the daily slings & arrows that life throws at us, it’s harder to understand why more people don’t do it.

If there was a land of milk & honey both divine substances would be derived from heroin. However, this fabled land doesn’t exist & since heroin has a nasty side effect (a crippling physical & psychological dependence, leading to an addiction which often rapidly strangles & ruins life) is unlikely to ever be the panacea in the promised land.

          • aussiecynic says:

Yes O’DB I think the side effects far outway the benefits…
Marijuana.. is being used more and more as a pain relieving messure however even this has side effects…. of psychosis… cant win eother way..

          • Not really AC. Only very few suffer from psychosis and its not clear they wouldn’t suffer from this in the absence of dooby. Certainly they probably have a tendency towards it already. I’ve been a keen user of dooby since I was about 14 and I’m Ok (just need to scream at the moon, stab a small creature and drink its blood every now & then).

            G’Day GIC

I have read it depends on the levels of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) hydroponic plants have higher levels…
When I was younger much younger tried it and all I got was a great night sleep….. no high.. but it was funny watching the others go more and more silly… have had a few friends in those days who see things, go nuts etc….
from like you howling at the moon to full on crazy and attack folks… and these where the sanest people normally… just goes to show I guess

You are confusing dooby use with werewolf tendencies matey :) .. was that dog ever checked or only seen on full moons…. ;)

          • O'DB says:

The possibility of psychosis resulting from marijuana use is miniscule and is likely to be co-dependent on a number of environmental factors coupled with (as GiC mentions) a genetic pre-disposition. Recent research suggests that schizophrenia (a psychosis that has previously been linked to marijuana use) is declining despite the fact that marijuana usage has been on the increase and also in face of the increasing levels of the active ingredient, delta-9-THC.
