Immigrants seem to be a constant topic of conversation in the news these days flower smellers.
In the UK there is a feeling that immigrants get better welfare and overall treatment then people who hold a British passport and say that it is getting harder to find people with English as there first language working in London. Immigrants are given the seasonal work as they are prepared to work for a lower wage than native students or workers who rely on seasonal employment.
Then there is the case of North America with the white settlers eventually ousting the natives from there lands – a case of pushy immigrants or conquerors?
What about the Australian issues of turning away boatloads of immigrants?
In Britain and many other countries there are now 2nd and third generation immigrants who hold a passport of the country where they now live and are considered residents rather than immigrants.
What is your view on the issues of immigrants? Do tell!

Is that Conan O’Brien in the cartoon?
Tin tin more like!
Crap Irish origin comedian turned TV chat show host meets Gallic child detective. Result; red neck racist. Nice one.
Actually, thats niether Tin Tin nor Conan O’Predictable, it’s Jimmy Sommerville from the Communards.
Immigrants are people, they deserve to be treated as humans. Immigrants went through a process and sometimes depending on which country they come from they undergo along hard process. They immigrate for a reason to have a better life and I believe embassies won’t allow their immigration if they don’t believe they can contribute something for the good of the country they are trying to go to.

agree with ELG above on this one
the only race that matters is the human race- the planet is plenty big enough for us to live wherever we wish.
Pagan here I was expecting some comment that would to say the least begin a heated discussion…. but then you go and say something as wonderful as that… oh you are full of surprises… Thank you …

There is in London an immigrant shopkeeper who cannot get a Uk passport. His name is Al-Fayed. Can anybody tell me why he was allowed into the country and how he made his money
Cheating, lying and stealing – allegedly
His first big deal was as the agent who negotiated the contract to build the Dubai World Trade Centre building in the 70s. From that point onwards he had money to invest.
Is Fayed on indefinite visit visa then or what?? Serious question.
David, I heard it was the port of Sharjah. But in any case, the story indeed starts in UAE.
Missed this one out – it’s worth reading as it’s extracts from the Department of Industry enquiry into the purchase of House of Fraser by the Fayeds which included Harrods)

Thanks for this Angry – it went into SPAM initially as lotsa links but recovered accordingly!
There’s no problem with immigrants of any nationality to the UK as far as i’m concerned as long as the Law of the Land are upheld and there is no preference given to said peersons regarding housing, social services, hand-outs etc
Any person should have the right to live in peace and safety… regardless of where they are from…
Immigration is a sentive issue…. our previous government made no bones their thought on refugees and immigration…
The boats loads turned away where refugees being carted here by people smugglers.. desperate people doing desperate things.. they where sent to camps to await processing… the present governement is in the process of shutting down these camps and processing refugees to see they taken care of one way or the other…..
the one things Australians do know is immigration after all none of us would be in this countries without it.. whether volenteer or transported we all came from some where else… some times people just need to be reminded…..

Immigrants to the UK have added so much value and richness to British lkife, I for one cannot imagine living here without all the South Asians, West Indians, Eastern Europeans.
Everything from “British” cuisine such as Chicken Tikka Massala to Music has been influenced by “immigrants” like me and many others.
Immigrants like my families and friends have added tremendous value to Britian through not only taking on the menial jobs that the “indigenous” people were not interested in doing but also through working hard and making headway into professions such as medicine, law and of course business.
I know of many immigrants who through sheer hard work, determination and endless sacrifices have become very successful and prominent in their chosen field.
The opportunities are there for everyone if only people got off their backsides rather than moaning about what others are getting or taking away from them.
I have lived in the UK for over 30 years i.e. most of my life and gone are the days when I felt unwelcome and different. I do consider myself British, but of course I still support India everytime they play England at cricket

I was actually in Harrods last weekend and had a brief chat with Mr Fayed, honestly. Me and a mate were going to go to one of the many food counters in there for something to eat and Fayed walked past with 3 bouncers (to be fair, I reckon he needs them, MI6 and all that and the fact that he looks well old)
He recommended somewhere in there to eat, all was going swimmingly until my mate started singing ‘here come the shopkeeper, Mohammed’ Ali G stylie. Needless to say we didn’t eat in there after that.
Immigration is fine with me. If I or my family could no longer stay in this country and our lives were endangered, I would expect the same acceptance anywhere else in the world. It’s the one’s that take the preverbial that anger me.
And the bad fashion sense. Everyday without fail I see stonewash, tramlines (on hair, not road) white slingbacks and enough Gel to make Peter Andre cry with envy.
Perhaps they can undertake some kind of fashion course when they pledge allegiance in the future.
Cool Lib
Oh damn!!! I kind of look like that American, only because I have red hair. I’m not missing any teeth, nor do I wear overalls though,
As the world gets more like a global village then we certainly do need to stop compartmentalising people and be more open to other races. However we also need to think of a way to keep our national identities, its a delicate balancing act.
Certainly immigrants have improved the UK in many ways and it is these things we should focus on rather than any negative aspect.
The other thing we do need to be aware of is how to help the countries undergoing mass emigration to retain their people and the causes of this. It’s not good for countries to suffer mass economic emigration as it tends to be the sought after and valuable skills that go first, such as the doctor crises in Malawi. Allowing people to earn a decent living and enjoy a good standard of living in their country of origin is certainly the other thing we should focus on as well as protecting the resources of the planet.
Hello Gareth
Thought of you when I saw this
http://www.rahoi.com/2006/03/may-i-take-your-order/
Welcome to my world.
When I visit for Bo Jnr’s wedding I’ll show you a few more. I see this sort of menu often, most don’t have English here so I tend to go for ‘pot luck’ Last week I chose the guy who printed the menu!!!
Looking forward to it
I don’t see why immigration should be a cause for concern. The human race has seen constant and consistent growth in socio-economic standards for the last 300 years, accelerating in the last 100, then topping that in the last 50 and so on and since 2000 there has been as much growth as in the 1st 50 yeas of the previous century.
Thus once can only conclude that Immigration or cross border movement of people is part of a healthy world. Infact leading organizations, such as Unilever, GE, Microsoft, Samsung, Hong Kong Bank, etc owe their leadership to being able to harness the best talent in the world and it has been constantly observed that companies that fail to build multi-cultural workforces do not do as well as the highly local ones. In India I have always maintained that the biggest hurdle in the ambitions of our companies lies in their teams being too Indian, and some of these companies are now trying to overcome that.
It’s also important to realise that an immigrant is a very person. S/he has made a huge effort to move, showing a special will and determination. Places that receive him/her will greatly benefit.
Er… is everyone (almost) being politically correct here in saying they are in favour of immigration, especially when it comes to immigrating to Europe? Serious question, since I recall that a few months ago, there were many amongst us who were highly critical of the idea. Or am I confused?
I for one would disagree that immigration has only positives. Immigrants certainly bring their fair share of trouble to a country when they come with a non-collaborative mindset and categorically refuse to live by the law of the land. The points raised by Jem in their post are causes for concern in my opinion. It is nonsense that immigrants end up better off in a country than its born citizens! Something has gone wrong with the process if this is what we end up with.
This does not mean that I am against immigration (regulars know my stand on the global village concept as Gareth describes it), what I am saying is that immigration has to be well planned and managed by the welcoming country for it to be success.
Its generally the country they go to that is at fault by trying to be too politically incorrect. For instance many times when I visit a company in China they order Pizza for lunch as they have a Western visitor. We generally don’t want it, we want the local stuff and no fuss made.
Problems tend to arise if the foreigner demands things, it gets the locals back up.
So in general we see no issue, its only when busy body politicians or demanding ‘extremists’ get involved that it goes pear shaped. Balance is needed, do your own cultural thing but be respectful of the local standards and behavioural norms and there is no issue.
Its generally the country they go to that is at fault by trying to be too politically incorrect
Should read
Its generally the country they go to that is at fault by trying to be too politically correct
Britain has failed to convert it’s inward immigration into a huge advantage, unlike the US. Considering Indian/Asian immigration into the UK began much earlier than into the US, it is odd to see virtually no senior level executives in any large British companies, with the exception of Vodafone, where Arun Sarin was imported from the US. It appears that racial considerations play a dominant role in the professional and social structures and have become a handicap.
I am pleased to say that India has been welcoming of immigrants from all countries. We have immigration from Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Iran, Israel, East Europe, etc. This has been going on for thousands of years and continues till today and the people very quickly become a part of mainstream India. I think now India should go a step further and allow sale of property to foreigners truly making it into an immigration friendly nation.
erm G.K Noon?
G’Day Chook
It is funny but down here anyways it appears not to be the immigrants who cause the problems its the 2nd and 3rd generations that cause the hassles… the cronulla riots a few years back was all 2nd and third generations…. not a very nice time or pretty site that was, but even in France they where saying the riots there were the children of immigrants not the immigrants themselves… perhaps it is trouble reconcilling their ethnic backgrounds with the country they are raised in…. dont know….
