GO! Watch the Dubai Easter warning!

Posted on March 18th, 2008 by Jim

On the run up to Easter the following note just arrived in the GO! Smell the flowers inbox here in Dubai:

Dear Friends,

Please note that effective Friday 14/3/08, all those visiting Jebel Ali / Dubai Churches are not allowed to park the cars near the church. There is a special arrangement close to the churches and from there you can either walk it out to church or there are regular RTA special buses picking you up from the parking area and dropping you to the church and vice-versa.

This arrangement is through the Holy week right up to Easter Sunday. There are police and transport officials directing you to the parking lots. The buses are very convenient and a whole lot of them every 2-5 mins leaving from the parking lot and taking you to church. At the church entrance there is a security screening of each and every person entering the church premises (Male or Female). In view of the huge crowd for the Holy week services, it better to leave a little early to get to church on time on account of the above security arrangements.

Please pass it on to everyone you think will be attending church services at Jebel Ali/Dubai. And let us co-operate with Dubai Police regarding these security arrangements.

Should the church goers of Dubai be concerned as the email spreads throughout the inboxes of the UAE? Do tell!

Why the security screening? Is trouble expected??

  2. David S says:

I have an Indian Christian friend who is a regular church goer. He told me last week that there were new metal detector security screenings at all the churches in Dubai, together with police presence.

The rumours in his church community are that an attack is suspected.

  3. Bridget Jones says:

    Surely not in expat-dependent Dubai?!

Methinks people are bored and creating some excitement for themselves ha!

  4. Urban Pagan says:

if an attack were to occur it wouldn’t be muslims involved as they are a peace loving people.

there is only so much love I can spread around now!

I don’t tend to ask about peoples health as they’d get reiki’d or crystal healed into submission.

‘There is no such thing as Muslim-terrorism, the same as there is no such thing as Muslim pig-eating or Muslim gambling’

Read it somwhere at the weekend, interesting don’t you think?

  7. Hey, Hope happens to be my first name. Except, I’m not all that little! Hopefully nothing bad happens over the holidays, here, there or anywhere.

What is Easter? I mean why is it celebrated? Is it similar to Muslim Eid after the month of fasting?

It is actually the most important period of the Christian calendar (though you would be forgven for thinking that Christmas is).

It is the ‘anniversary’ of the death of Christ, his subsequent resurrection and ascendancy to heaven and widely celebrated with public holidays in the West (rather like Eid here).

    • Dubai Guy says:

I didn’t knew it is the death anniversary of Christ, thanks for sharing that info.

What about the fasting? Is Easter not celebrated after a month of fasting?

Easter is a time when people who believe in the ridiculous concept of god gorge themselves with chocolate eggs and watch Robert Powell in some far fetched story about a workshy hippy who got nicked.

Only they can’t agree on when he was born. Where he lived. Where or if he died. If he had sex before he died. If he was gay.

So its another great work of fiction in the name of religion.

  9. Dubai Guy says:

Since you talked about the death of Christ, I would like to share the Muslim opinion through this Quranic Verses

“And because of their saying (in sarcastic boast), “We killed Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah,” – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of Jesus was put over another man, and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they did not kill him”

“But Allah raised him [Jesus] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All Powerful, All Wise” (4:158)

It is celebrating the Death and Resurrection of Jesus… Friday is Good Friday because is suppose to be when Jesus was Crucified…. and Sunday when he was resurrected and assended to heaven…. so the story goes…..
He was seen by several people including Mary Magdeline prior to his assention….
