Go Smell the GroundHog!

Groundhog ‘I’ll be back’
“I’ll Be Back.”

In light of Purple13′s singing Hamster image, I thought I’d post my own rodent in the form of a guerilla Ground Hog…actually, that kind of looks like a Prairie Dog. Hmm… Yesterday was Groundhog’s Day over here. I’m not sure how many of you are familiar with the practice, but every February 2nd we like to pull a sleeping rodent from its den and have it predict the weather. It sounds weird, but the rodent is usually correct in his forecasts 50% of the time.

The nexus of Groundhog’s Day festivities is Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania home of Punxsutawney Phil. He comes out once a year and lets the people know whether or not there will be six more weeks of winter. This year, he’s forecasted six more weeks of the cold stuff for us.

Do you think you’ll have six more weeks of cold weather? Or for those living in warmer climates, six more weeks of warm weather?

  1. Well, according to Wiarton Willie (which is Canada’s version of Punxsutawney Phil) we’re going to have an early spring. To be honest, we haven’t had much of a winter here in the Toronto area, so I can’t complain. Altho I probably will. ;)

I’m very curious, how does a rodent predict the weather. Has America found a talking rodent and kept it secret?

  3. Hey Funkygirl… you just reminded me of one of my favourite movies… Bill Murray’s character did a 180 degree turnaround after what he went through :)

That’s my extent of knowledge of Groundhog Day… and as for Punxsutawney Phil… what a job he has!!

I found a great clip for your Groundhog Day festivities… look out for the meercat ;)

My money is on global warming. I think winter will end shortly this season.

However, here in western NY, there is sheets of solid ice everywhere. Does ice count? or just snow?

Only just saw the movie and found it really funny etc etc.

We have loads of old sayings – red sky at night, etc and most of them are traced back to actual scientific fact so there may be some pre-disposition to that particular varmit / critter that it can detect when is a good time to leave its hole and start buiding damms whatever.

Personally if i see a penguin marching through derbyshire, then i guess its gonna be a cold one.

    Hey Jim here!

We tied the knot on Groundhog day – Feb 1st 2006 and we chose that day so it could re-occur in our minds all over again!!

  8. Thanks for sharing FunkyGirl, Bridget had no clue about this practice!

We’re having the coldest winter in a while here in Dubai, and Bridget predicts the summer is going to be hell. 6 weeks? Make that 12. or 15 even. Duh!
