In light of Purple13′s singing Hamster image, I thought I’d post my own rodent in the form of a guerilla Ground Hog…actually, that kind of looks like a Prairie Dog. Hmm… Yesterday was Groundhog’s Day over here. I’m not sure how many of you are familiar with the practice, but every February 2nd we like to pull a sleeping rodent from its den and have it predict the weather. It sounds weird, but the rodent is usually correct in his forecasts 50% of the time.
The nexus of Groundhog’s Day festivities is Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania home of Punxsutawney Phil. He comes out once a year and lets the people know whether or not there will be six more weeks of winter. This year, he’s forecasted six more weeks of the cold stuff for us.
Do you think you’ll have six more weeks of cold weather? Or for those living in warmer climates, six more weeks of warm weather?

Well, according to Wiarton Willie (which is Canada’s version of Punxsutawney Phil) we’re going to have an early spring. To be honest, we haven’t had much of a winter here in the Toronto area, so I can’t complain. Altho I probably will.
Yeah, strangely enough we haven’t had too bad of a winter here either! Must be that Global Warming they keep talking about.
I’m very curious, how does a rodent predict the weather. Has America found a talking rodent and kept it secret?
Isn’t that the president or one of his aides????? (sorry – small attempt at breakfast humour!)
lol – like it jonathan, although if rumours are to be believed, it would be a reptile if it was the president!! Ha :O
It depends on whether or not he sees his shadow…LOL. It’s all verrrry scientific.
Many people find it hard to believe that our rodents can predict the weather, but they can indeed. All that you really need to do is look at how much food they’ve stock piled!
Hey Funkygirl… you just reminded me of one of my favourite movies… Bill Murray’s character did a 180 degree turnaround after what he went through
That’s my extent of knowledge of Groundhog Day… and as for Punxsutawney Phil… what a job he has!!
I found a great clip for your Groundhog Day festivities… look out for the meercat

Thanks for the clip! We love Bill Murray in Groundhog’s Day and were going to watch it, but for some reason the television networks just didn’t put it on for the holiday.
My money is on global warming. I think winter will end shortly this season.
However, here in western NY, there is sheets of solid ice everywhere. Does ice count? or just snow?
I think as long as it’s frozen water it counts. Sounds slippery.
I love that movie too… Ange… never heard such a silly thing….. ever…

i think we are heading for an early Winter and its going to be a cold one……I can feel it me bones…. Its also going to ran I just washed the car…….
AC
Tolds Ya it was gonna rain…. I washed me car and now I have thunder storms rolling in…..
Yippeeeeee
Only just saw the movie and found it really funny etc etc.
We have loads of old sayings – red sky at night, etc and most of them are traced back to actual scientific fact so there may be some pre-disposition to that particular varmit / critter that it can detect when is a good time to leave its hole and start buiding damms whatever.
Personally if i see a penguin marching through derbyshire, then i guess its gonna be a cold one.
Hey Jim here!
We tied the knot on Groundhog day – Feb 1st 2006 and we chose that day so it could re-occur in our minds all over again!!
It was THAT good, huh?
Sounds lovely you two, but I hate to say our Groundhog’s Day is on Feb 2nd!
Thanks for sharing FunkyGirl, Bridget had no clue about this practice!
We’re having the coldest winter in a while here in Dubai, and Bridget predicts the summer is going to be hell. 6 weeks? Make that 12. or 15 even. Duh!
We’re enjoying the brrrrrrr weather BJ,
Sat outiside in Fleeces last night, slurpoing on carrott juice! Who needs ski Dubai, right?
Warm carrot juice? Hmmm…prefer the hot chocolate myself. Sounds like you guys had a very cold winter!
