Hello from Canada.
Look at this lovely abode for hornets I discovered in my back yard yesterday.
As much as I abhor hornets (or more precisely their tendency to sting) I have to admire their engineering skills.
What amazes me even more is the fact that, although having brushed past this little apple tree all summer, we did not notice the nest until yesterday. Thank goodness we didn’t disturb it by accident.
The quandary now is how are we going to pick the apples without disturbing the nest? I hate to destroy it – after all the poor things are going to be little ice-sculptures soon thanks to our winter climate. It’d be cool to keep the nest once that happens though!
Does anyone else have less than welcome residents in their yards?

They are creatures of habit and will often form a nest in the same place every year. Unfortunately, ours was in the front door area. When it was smaller, my husband, dressed in protective gear which made him look like an alien, would knock it down. ewwwwww!!

Dangerous indeed – I am trying to keep my kids away – they are ready to take a rake to it and run. Bad idea!

Hi Angela, I don’t have a garden but my parents have recently been besieged by a number of wasp nests that they have had to get rid of, primarily because my dad is allergic and because of the grandkids.
Their nests are in the ground though so no architectural quandries there.
I think that’s worse as you have no idea they are there.

Yep discovered when mowing the lawn, luckily before the nest was disturbed
Phew lucky!

Hi Angela
We have an old wasp nest on the eaves above our front door – council came and gassed the residents last year.
I can’t reach to knock it down but leaving it hopefully teaches any wannabe residents that it’s not safe.

Wow, that thing is huge!
PussDaddy
Yes – it’s probably at least 30 to 40 cms in diameter, maybe more – needless to say i haven’t gotten close enough to measure!

Blimey, it looks like an image of a grannies head that old hornets nest!
Are you getting it removed or leaving it BEE?
Sorry.
What, you couldn’t help it right!

There are couple of annoying French people in our pool from time to time but nobody will let me gas them or attack them with a rake, no fun at all really.
LOL. We have ants that are invading our home from the outside.
Regarding the French, figure a way to leave them wineless. That should do the trick and then you can drink it.
