Okay so here is some really good advice for singles everywhere – if you want to find true love – buy yourself a calculator.
According to Australian mathematician, Dr. Clio Cresswell of the University of Sydney, “singles face much better odds if they date, and then reject, 12 potential partners, and then start searching for love.”
In an interview with Reuters the eminent number-cruncher reiterates the point that it takes work to find Mr. or Mrs. Right and that’s why we need to build a sort of romantic track record to help us sort out who might be eligible for the top spot.
Why she settled on the number 12 is unclear from the short news item, but no doubt she goes into intricate detail in the book she has written called “Mathematics and Sex.”
Now, as much as I can see this dating theory being popular with accountants and bankers, who probably would start talking about ratios or quotients, I can’t help thinking that concentrating on the numerical sequence of romantic liaisons is likely to detract somewhat from the true purpose of the exercise.
And I am assuming that once you have reached the magical number twelve there has to be some sort of rating system that determines which, if any, need to come back for further assessment. Or I suppose you just start all over again with another set of twelve.
Hint: To save time try and find triplets to date so you can cross three off at once!
Good luck and happy counting. Now where was I? Was that number eight or nine? Oh damn, I never was any good at math. Guess I’m going to have to start all over again.

My husband was the very first person that I dated and we have been happily married for 12.

Angela,
Also, we were married on the 24 in some month. 12 + 12 = 24!

See! 12 features in there somewhere.
Mandy (my partner) lucky number is 13 – it just seems to crop up everywhere – half of 26 etc – all sorts of places.
It’s as is there’s some cosmic significance attached to that number…. then again it could be pure coincidence.
Is that close enough?
Jonathan.

Close enough – a friend of a friend swears that 13 is his lucky number – maybe so with you too!
Thanks for the comment.

One for every month?
2012 – the Mayan prophecy? Hmmm.
Hhhmm maybe this number 12 is more insidious it first appears – may need further investigation.

Like anything based on odds or probabilities, it’s all based on averages & statistics. So on average, after 12 dates the most favourable response to partner selection was recorded. However, human nature, sex & love, though they fit this statistical analysis & seems to give an average based best choice, in reality will purely depend on individuals, environment & choices for each scenario.
Having not read Dr. Cresswell’s book I speak from a position of ignorance, but based on my own studies statistically speaking on average I’m highly likely to be correct.
So, I’ve saved you money & time & precised the essence of the book for you. Who says this internet malarkey is a complete waste of time & money?

Thank you – I shall take the aforesaid savings and purchase a lottery ticket – me thinks the “odds & probablilities” of me winning a lot of money probably are better than ever finding Mr. Right!

Heard somewhere that the chances of winning the lottery are the equivalent to being struck by lightning 6 times. But you’re probably right: still more chance of that than finding the mythical uni-horned Mr. Right.
Despite the stats on lottery wins I do buy a weekly ticket. I’m a gambling man. To spice things up with my g/f I like to gamble on ‘rodeo sex’ – mid-coitus I shout out the name of an ex-lover & time how long I can stay in the saddle.
Oh you DO like to play with fire.
If I were a gambler (which I am not) I’d give you odds of 12 – 1.
There’s that number again!

I don’t know if “12″ is he magic number…maybe for some. For me when I simply stopped looking for love and decided to just enjoy life with or without someone….the special someone just sort of walked into my life.
I think the more people one dates allows a person to maybe decide what they do or don’t want in a partner…does it take 12 I’m not sure…but sometimes you find what your looking for when you have clearer choices of whats really around.

Very true.
It boild down to the realisation that happiness is your own internal responsibility and if you are constantly looking for someone to assume that responsibility for you, you are never going to find him or her.
