4418d1231345410-moobs6-1Although the pictures maybe funny, moobs (man boobs, moobies, gynecomastia, pseudo gynecomastia) is a serious issue. The idea for this post was inspired by Bigger Fatter Blog , which is a very good blog if you read between the lines. Information was provided by Bigger Fatter Blog, wikipedia and http://www.gynecomastia.org/

manboobsBRAMoobs however much we all joke about it especially well endowed men, it brings up the issue of obesity and men’s breast cancer. Breast cancer in men is about 2% of all breast cancer patients. However, it is usually fatal because symptoms are ignored. If you find a lump, you should get a mammogram whether you are a woman or a man.

The term gynecomastia comes from the Greek words gyne meaning “woman” and mastos meaning “breast.” In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or, as adolescence wanes, a few years later. But the remaining 10% are burdened with a social handicap that causes a deep and complex shame, and puts one’s relationship with one’s body at risk.

male_bse_01Self-exams for men with gynecomastia or without should be done just like women. It is best done while showering because the finer details of the breast when slippery are easier to find. Just as women, men need to get acquainted with their breasts so that they notice differences. Things to look for include firm lump, enlarging area, nipple discharge, nipple changes, puckering, skin being pulled inward and discoloration.

90% of men with gynecomastia are obese. According to Gynecomastia.org, “That makes sense for many reasons. For certain cancers like breast cancer there is a link to estrogen. Fat stores more estrogen. There is also evidence in the medical literature that testosterone can prevent breast cancer. Being that fat men tend to have lower testosterone levels and higher estrogen levels then it would follow that they would be more likely to develop breast cancer. Fat also tends to store more carcinogens and fat people tend to eat more processed foods that are low in anti-oxidants. That too can increase the risks for all sorts of cancers. Fat people do develop cancer at a higher rate than lean people so I would have to say that it is reasonable to conclude that fat men are more likely to develop breast cancer than lean men.”

There are several potential causes:
· puberty
· steroid abuse (bitch tits)
· obesity
· marijuana use (possibly)
· tumors
· genetic disorders
· chronic liver disease
· side effects of many medications
· castration
aging
· Klinefelter Syndrome
· Gilbert’s Syndrome

Most men are embarrassed to talk about such issues, so don’t get the help that they need. I strongly encourage men with gynecomastia and with pseudo gynecomastia to examine their breasts. Now, most of us remember the classic Sinefield episode with the “mansierre.”

0aabraman

Well, the Japanese were the first to market it and now other manufacturers are making them.  Although, those who are transgender and cross dressers may use them, Often, they are used for men who are body conscious. Men can obtain a variety of other shapewear including girdles, underwear, shirts, etc.

To see examples go to www.agenolonger.com and www.underworks.com. Male_Tank_Top_Compression_Vest__Stage_Two_Marena_You probably would be surprised at the number of shapewear that is available to men and some mainstream women’s manufacturer’s are beginning to look into marketing of such items.

Men and women, do you practice breast self-exams?

Thanks for keeping me ABREAST of the situation CC!

You’ve inspired me to GO! work on my chest.

  2. I’m sure it’s an issue, but male breast cancer is only a tiny fraction of potential breast cancers (2%, you mention).

Further, in terms of male cancers it must be also be a diminishing small possibility, with prostate & colorectal cancer being far more probable (& in Western countries, liver & lung cancer from alcohol & smoking being far more problematic). Here’s some stats for cancer types in males (UK):

    http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerstats/incidence/males/

So, though male breast cancer might be an issue, it’s potential harm should be kept in perspective by far more prevalent forms.

  3. O’DB,

I do realize that this is a very small portion of the male population, but this was just to raise a little awareness and have some fun. Also, I have written about other diseases that are far more prevalent and important.

I feel sorry for those boobs. In fact, practicing some better health habits would go a long way for these poor guys. Remember, the Seinfeld episode and the bra for men? What did they name that?

    • Kathleen,

The answer is in the last two paragraphs and includes a picture. :)

The bra was called the mansierre which is sort of like a brassiere but for men with man boobs.

I am Mike “Fat Bastard” Gerard of the New Fat Acceptance. You can read articles about the New FA movement on my Bigger Fatter Blog on blogspot.

Bigger Fatter Blog is the next phase in fat acceptance. The days of justifying our fatness by lying and saying we have a mysterious genetic or metabolic disorder are over. We now freely admit to and embrace what the fat haters would call gluttony. We fatlings are no longer apologists for our size nor our greedy gluttony. We are fat because we eat huge amounts of food and we like it. If you don’t like it get used to it because fat people are now the overwhelming majority.

My advice to America is to EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT!

  6. A new study says that “extremely obese people” (which is defined as being more than 80 pounds overweight) die as little as three years and as much as twelve years sooner than normal weight individuals. There could be a lot of reasons for this. The more obese a person becomes, the less they are probably moving around, exercising, and taking care of themselves. It’s like a snowball effect on your health and something that needs to be addressed now.
